In a country ruined by sea level rise, plague, and wildfires, Jess Diaz leaves her father’s body in their home in Las Vegas, packs a gun she doesn’t know how to use, and heads for the border wall west of the Mississippi River. Her hopes of gaining entry into the last civilized vestiges of the United States are dashed when an officer at the wall denies her entry.
Now stuck in the barren west with no survival skills, Jess follows a woman named Beck, an enigmatic elk hunter with a hidden past, into the high country of the Rockies. On the way, they band together with three other women: a former cop, a Brazilian radio host, and a bookworm. Jess soon finds the wilderness requires more than strength, and the elements are not the only challenge to overcome. As their friendships deepen, Jess grapples with her self-doubt, Beck attempts to come to terms with her tragic history, and the others find hope in the most rugged of landscapes.
